Labour was not supposed to end this week staring into the abyss. In the event, the volley of shots hit him squarely in the foot. 1.6 billion package would make little difference. And there was worse to come. No 10 had unwisely hinted at. Mr Brown to “go with honour”. But many are less than willing. It doesn’t help that Downing Street is far from united.
